The University of Massachusetts Science Fiction Society's (UMSFS—in Amherst, that is) 50th anniversary is next year, and planning has just started for a reunion at next year's Arisia, under the auspices of Mary L. Robison—see the Facebook page UMSFS reunion or the official umsfs Yahoo! Group (start from Rob Bazemore's message of 21 January; you may have to join the group if you are not already a member).

Please spread the word.

Hello Arisia Attendees!

Reminisce for a moment about Arisia past -- perhaps you remember your trip to Never-Never-Land, or when we met the Robots at their exciting party last year? The producers of these fun and entertaining events are at it again! We wish to extend an invitation to you. Take off your hat and put on your space helmets, step on board the rocket, because this year we are traveling to --

ALIEN WORLDS!

Yes, my friends.... This year we take off on the I.S.S.S. Arisia and begin our tour of the interstellosphere. Be entranced by guests from the planet Blixel. Meet your counterpart from the moons of Zorch! Wonder in amazement how we actually got the sentient cloud-forms from Jupiter to make an appearance!

This Saturday party is fun for the whole family! From 8PM through till dawn on Charon, we are visiting thrilling and unique alien landscapes. There is no alcohol on our spaceship, because we don't want to get pulled over by the Kepler Kops, so it is open to all ages.

We may even have special guest performance from a very special Earthling, Kelsey Jarboe. Her website can be found at: http://www.toomanyfeelings.com/

Of course it is impossible to make this journey without the support of the community, and therefore we are obliged to ask for help with a few things:

We are looking for old Christmas lights for decoration, with preference to the high density grids or icicle lights. We can pick them up anywhere in the Boston area.

As running a space ship is expensive, we are also obliged to ask for donations. Including room, decor, and food, rocket propellant, extra Oxygen, Universal Translators, and a whole bunch of other nuts and bolts (usually metric), running a party can cost in excess of $400.

You can paypal me at watermosaic [at] gmail [dot] com. We will be incredibly thankful, and you will be part of a great community effort.

Arisia 2011: Bigger, better, and building up to Boskone

Apparently Arisia is a sexathon? I must be doing the wrong events!

As for having once been part of Boskone, I guess fact-checking is dead. :)

...for SPACING OUT: Eat, Grok, & Be Nerdy (Saturday night party)

SCHEDULE OF GEEKERY (Updated, but still subject to change...)

5:00PM - Start of party
Food, drink, and atmosphere (both kinds) available throughout the evening.
Space mad-libs and trivia (with prizes) at various times (not during talks).
Each talk builds on the ones before it, but is intended to be accessible to newcomers as well.

6:00PM - Modeling the Heavens & Conception of Space Flight (talk - 15 min.)
How did the human sense of wonder about the sky lead to an understanding of gravity, optics, and more? How did that lead to fantasies, speculations, and finally plans to transport humans into outer space? What were those fantasies, speculations, and plans like? How have science fiction and the reality of space flight mutually fed one another?

6:30PM - A Brief History of Space Exploration (talk - 15 min.)
How did our ideas about spaceflight become a reality? What didn't happen the way we thought it would? What path has our exploration of space taken so far and how has it effected our lives here on Earth?

7:00PM - Energy Sources, Storage, & Delivery (talk - 15 min.)
What is now publicly recognized as a major influence on world politics and economics has always been known to aerospace engineers as a crucial limiting factor: energy. What is it, really, and why is it so important? Where can we get it, how can we store it, and how can we bring it to where it's needed? What energy challenges remain for human spaceflight? How have advances in space technology for energy management interacted with the development of energy technologies used here on Earth. How might they interact in the future?

7:30PM - Propeller, Jet, & Rocket Propulsion (talk - 15 min.)
OK, so how did we actually get this spaceflight thing off the ground (so to speak)? Learn about our primary means of propulsion for human space flight, the rocket, and the technologies that led up to it.

8:00PM - Launch, Orbit, Navigation, & Reentry (talk - 15 min.)
So that's basically how we make spaceships go! But how do we make them go where we _want_? How do we get into space and stay up there? How do we get back down safely?

8:30PM - Control Systems & Communication (talk - 15 min.)
A spacecraft has many components that have to work in concert, in some cases making on-the-fly adjustments faster than a human pilot could. How are the various sensors and actuators monitored, controlled, and coordinated? How is communication and telemetry handled?

9:00PM - Space Physiology & Hazards of Space (talk - 15 min.)
There are lots of reasons why a human being cannot survive in outer space without technological aid. Even inside the partially controlled environment of a modern spacecraft, there are aspects of spaceflight that still have detrimental effects on humans. How does the environment of space effect human physiology and what other hazards are present during human spaceflight?

9:30PM - Life Support (talk - 15 min.)
It's not "human spaceflight" without the humans! And humans have all these pesky requirements... eating, drinking, breathing, etc.... And they also have pet peeves about being cooked, frozen, or irradiated. How do we accommodate such a needy payload?

10:00PM - Landing on the Moon (talk - 15 min.)
Here we zoom in on the history of the Apollo program, paying specific attention to the underlying technologies.

10:30PM - A Return to Wonder (talk - 15 min.)
The future is wide open! What could be next for humans in space? What new technologies might be developed? How can space exploration benefit humanity?

12:00AM - End of party
Your hosts are now tired. Let them go to bed.

Check the party board for room number!

As you prepare for the convention known as Arisia, the folks at Ziggurat Labs would like to offer these packing tips to enhance your Mad Science experience:

1. Pack Pajamas*!
Ziggurat Lab's annual pajama party runs from 7:30 to 1am on Friday night. Why, you may even want two sets: one for the kid-friendly first hour, and another for the grown-up** hours!

(*or Pyjamas, for those with a superior orthographic sensibility)
(**for all ages of grown-ups.)

2. Pack your boots
In case you haven't noticed, it's snowy out there! Boots with lasers mounted on them could melt the ice for you. Is that too much to ask?

3. If you pack a Wormhole, remember your extractor!
Nothing's worse than getting all your Con goodies neatly packed into a quasi-atomic radius... and then realizing you can't get them back out once you're home.

Happy packing, and remember, it's for Science!

Your Robot Overlords say: Happy One Week till Convention! We hope you are all having a relaxing time ;)

I'm posting to remind you all that we are hosting a Robot Overlord Party on Sunday night at Arisia! It should be a blast. While this party is primarily for robots, cyborgs, and androids, you may bring your humans as well. Please do not leave them unattended!

Please dress up! We will try to make robot costume pieces available. Your kind donation to the cause will make this more possible.

If you have robot-like music you want to hear at the party, please suggest some of your favorite tracks in the comments below. Music will be kept at a background level so as to not interfere with the interactions of our fleshy guests.

We may have great party games in the robot and cyborg theme, like pin-the-arc-reactor-on-Tony-Stark's-chest and the call-and-response hide-and-seek game named after the 13th century robot merchant "R2!"-"D2!"

As we stated before, parties are a community effort. If you want to help with the purchasing of food and supplies, please send a donation via paypal to watermosaic [at] gmail [dot] com. Your contributions will be noted, and you will be appropriately honored. You will also have an opportunity to contribute at the party.

Our transmitters do not have infinite range. If you are excited about this party, please signal boost our message!

Hi All,

I'm new to the group, and new to throwing con parties, but an old-timer in terms of attending. Having not planned far enough in advance, I'm now looking for a room to sublet for a party one night (first choice: Saturday) to introduce Fantastic Books (which I publish) and launch Daniel M. Kimmel's Jar Jar Binks Must Die. I've been attending Arisia for two decades now (jeez, is it that long?!), but this will be my first party.

Any pointers, suggestions, or offers will be gratefully appreciated. Thanks, and happy new year!

This party will feature (great) FOOD, (non-alcoholic) DRINK, ... and (mad) SCIENCE! "Crash course" lectures will be given in short bursts periodically throughout the evening on topics relating to HUMAN SPACE FLIGHT. A broad range of topics will be covered, with an emphasis on the physics of space flight and spacecraft engineering. The time between talks will be open for discussion and awkward, nerdy socializing. A pamphlet including the Schedule of Geekery will be circulated at Arisia prior to the party.

The party will be in a suite on the closed party floor, but it will be an open party nonetheless. There will also be space mad libs and a space trivia game - with PRIZES!

Preview of Topics:
1. Modeling the Heavens & Conception of Space Flight
2. Propeller, Jet, & Rocket Propulsion
3. Launch, Orbit, & Reentry
4. Control Systems
5. Energy Sources, Storage, & Delivery
6. Space Physiology & Life Support
7. To the Moon!
8. Hazards of Space Flight
9. Navigation Beyond the Moon
10. The Future Soon

I don't throw con parties myself, but I figured I would post this in case anyone who is throwing a party would be interested in this.

Does anyone want/need leis for your con party? A local store near me (Ocean State Job Lot) is selling 36 count packs of leis (the plastic kind) for a mere $2! That's $.05 a lei!

Personally I love parties with themes and where there is something small and cheap that all of the attendees can have to make them feel included in the party theme and that is like a badge of honor as they wander around the rest of the con. I don't know how many people tend to hit parties but for $12 you could have over 200 leis to give away. That's pretty cool, I think. ;)

Anywho, if anyone is interested, let me know. ;)

Dear awesome Arisia folks!

Do you remember the Wonderland/Peter Pan party last year? Did you love it like we did? This year, we're having another great party! This letter outlines the basics of it:

Greetings Humans,

It has come to our Robot Overlord attentions that you are holding a Mad Science themed convention without acknowledging the vast landscape of amazing contributions to mad science made by your Robot Overlords. To this end, we have decided to hold a [party] where you will come and learn about the amazing instances of your Robot Foreoverlords.

We have democratically elected human representatives to host the party. Please show your unswerving loyalty. All you need to do is show up (attendance is mandatory) and have [fun].

Signed,
Your Robot Overlords

Sounds amazing, doesn't it? Throwing a party is a big chunk of work, and is definitely a community effort. Our party last year was so great because of contributions from people just like you. How you can help:

Donate money to the cause! Money will be used to buy refreshments and decorations to make the right atmosphere. Donations can be sent through paypal to watermosaic [at] gmail [dot] com, or you can contact me in person at the same e-mail address. Even $10 goes a very long way. Donors will be publicly thanked at the party.

Volunteer for us! E-mail me so I can get in touch with you at the convention. There will be refreshments to set up, decorations to hang, and invitations to spread out about the convention.

Show up and bring your friends! Really, it's the people who create the party, and we can't do it without you. Keep an eye out for the room and time, and then show up! This is very specifically an alcohol-and-loud-music-free party. We want people of all ages to meet each other and have a good time!

Our effort is to lavish attention and resources on evening events geared toward inclusion, to provide alternatives to the more exclusive and 'adult' themed parties. Please support us in this endeavor.

Thanks :)

The New England Science Fiction Association fannish picnic is on!

We have Picnic site #3 in the Blue Hills Reservation, on the shores of Houghton's Pond in Canton, Mass. Info and directions at the links:

http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/metroboston/blue.htm

http://www.mass.gov/dcr/parks/metroboston/maps/houghtonMAP.jpg

Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 10am till 6pm.
Park is open from 7am till dusk.

The picnic site is heavily wooded, with huge stone grills and picnic tables. Adjacent to the picnic site are parking and grassy fields. Nearby (five to ten minute walk) are the swimming beach, concession stand, and bathhouse.

Please bring stuff to share, and a note with what the food is so that people with restrictive diets can deal with that. Also we will need volunteers to bring common use items, such as charcoal, grills, lighter fluid, condiments, plates, flatware, and so on.

Bring bug spray and sunblock, folding chairs if you have them, games to play, and your own fun selves. If anyone has an EZ-up type tent they can bring, that would be very nice.

This picnic is open to the entire fannish community in the greater Boston area. There is no rain date, and unless the weather is really bad, plan to go on rain or shine.

The only real drawback is that the permittee (that's me or Suford) has to be onsite two hours before our 10am start-time with the permit.

I know I'm planning very much in advance but I need a few questions answered. I’d like to book whatever the new Weston has available for a big room to use for room party. When I go to the Weston website it doesn’t show me Con rates yet. How long should I wait for the con rate rooms? Should I just call the hotel about booking ahead of time to find the best available size room? And who should I speak with about having room party in general for next year’s convention? This is my first time trying too organize a room party.

Thank you!

I want to thank Arisia for having me out for the convention this past weekend. While I was unable to attend on Monday due to the weather, I had a fabulous time while I was there. Thanks to everyone who came by my table in the Pro's Nest. I may have mentioned that I have a new book coming out, and you're all invited to come the launch party. Here's the details:

"Paradigm Shift - Part Three: Emergence" Launch Party next Saturday at the Atomic Bean in Cambridge. There will be coffee, cake, and original artwork on the walls, and I'll be drawing sketches for anyone who asks! I may also be selling copies of the new book, too. ;)

Come on out and celebrate with me!
