Is the Turtle Track room set up with a potty for small children in the process of potty training? Just curious. It might make a difference in whether we send the kiddo with regular diapers or pull-ups.

Greetings!

As we are getting closer to Arisia '13, I am once again compiling the Family Friendly Guide to Arisia! It will contain Do's and Dont's, a review of policies for children and parents, and some highlights of the con that will appeal to the family, besides Turtle Track and Fast Track.

That's where you come in. If you are throwing a party, or running an event at con that you think is great for the whole family, let me know and I will put it in the guide! Last year we had items such as Tea Parties, the Geeky Belly Dance Show, and Higgins Armory demonstrations.

Look for the guide to be available electronically soon, and the hard copy at Arisia.

Thank you,
Dale Meyer-Curley

Hello Arisia,

I will be bringing my three-year-old son to Arisia for the first time. I excitedly signed him up for Turtle Track and can't wait to see him engage in all the neat programs. I was wondering if folks had any advice for how to handle the day, pitfalls to watch out for, and what is good practice for little children while at this particular con beyond the FAQs.

I've been to Arisia for a few years and feel a little clueless about how to balance my traditional Arisia activities with my excitement to include my son and facilitate him having an awesome experience. Any tricks of the trade to skating this transition like a champ? I hope my son and I will attend Arisia together for many years because we both have a great time.

p.s. I just opened up a thread about parenting. Please be forgiving and thoughtful in the comments. Non-parents, please be deferential. Parenting is hard.

Hello everyone!

I am making a handout for people interested in the family-friendly side of Arisia. I'll be listing the events and programs that aren't already covered by Fast Track, as well as some dos and don't s.

I'm looking for any input from panelists/event hosts that would like me to include their item on the flyer. So far, I'll be listing the Geeky Play Dates, the Geeky Belly Dance, and Drum Circle.

What I am looking for are things parents/guardians can do with their kids. I'm not looking for things that little ones are dropped off at.

All suggestions welcome!

Back in July I asked if there would be interest in some sort of "get-together" space for parents and their little ones at the con. There was great response, and I got not one, but TWO days for a Geeky Play Date!

They will be Saturday and Sunday Morning, 8-10am, in Grand Ballroom C. Although I created it so I'd have a place to bring my too-young-for-babysitting daughter, it is not limited to that age group. This is a space for all kids and their parents/guardians/etc. to gather, let their kids play while you can chat!

I'll bring some toys (definitely a tunnel), but if your kid has their favorite toy, please bring it along!

This will NOT be a "drop-off" zone. But it IS a "drop-in" event, so come and go whenever between 8 and 10!

See you at the con!

Hi everyone.

I'm considering giving my 10-year-old a bit more freedom of movement at the con this year than before. Can other parents tell me what arrangements they worked out for kids around the same age? Maybe staying in touch with walkie-talkies or cellphones (signal allowing), a buddy system with other kids, some combination of free-roaming and staying at Fast Track, etcetera? Historically she's always been happy to stay at Fast Track all day, but I have a feeling this year she'll want to venture out now and then.

Also, I see that there's no food allowed at Fast Track. If I were to pack a lunch for her, how would she go about eating it if she had a red ribbon and had to stay?

The Games Club of Maryland crew, [livejournal.com profile] kmusser , et al., introduced my son to a "mini-LARP" at their Brunswick (MD) Games Day earlier this month.  He was instantly hooked.  This kid has incredible physical energy, and an active, creative imagination...I shouldn't have been at all surprised that he took to live-action role-playing.

To the crew that ran the LARP in the lobby and courtyard on Sunday, thank you so much for so wholeheartedly accepting Q into your session.  He had a fantastic time.  He would have gone out with you guys for another two or three hours, if the game continued.  [Of course, I was starting to worry about hypothermia, frostbite, and all of those other things that parents worry about.  That, and I didn't pack a lot of extra clothes...he wasn't going to have any dry clothes left if he kept it up!]

In any event , if any of you are here reading this, please speak up so I know who I'm thanking.  Q put his silver piece in his "treasure box" here, and is hoping to collect more next year.
