For those intersted 3rd COME (3rd Conference on Middle Earth) has been cancelled.  Refunds will be sent out.

"It isn’t what we wanted. It is unfortunately what we have. Or don’t have.

The Conference On Middle earth 2015 kept losing presenters to financial issues, like department budget cuts and the like. It’s hard to have a conference without enough presenters. We lost two more just this week.

So here we are, less than a month away, and we have to cancel.
All memberships and banquet tickets will be completely refunded.

COMe 2015 will hang on to your eddresses. When the economy stabilizes, or even improves, we’ll see what we can do about resurrecting the conference.

After all, there were 40 years between the 2nd Conference on Middle earth in 1971 and the 3rd Conference On Middle earth in 2011.

This is a major bummer.

Arisia's Relaxacon is this weekend on Cape Cod.

Come hang out with fans, play games (we'll have lots), eat, stroll on the beach (the weather will be sunny, but a bit cool), swim (if you're hardy), ...

Hotel rooms are still available at the discounted Arisia rate (but you might want to call and reserve a room before you drive down).

(Posting here because of an earlier discussion of the complications of having one speed dating event that fits all, which we humbly believe we have solved. ;-)

The reminder: Boston Poly Speed Dating's first event is only one week away!

The particulars: April 26, 6 pm, at The Friendly Toast in Kendall Square, Cambridge.

The summary: This event originated in San Francisco as a way to make speed dating work for those of us whose identities and lives are a little more complicated than most speed dating events can handle. ;-) Our algorithm allows you to date as an individual or group, and to specify your gender(s) and the gender(s) of the people you're looking to meet.

The subtle hint: Registering in advance helps us optimize the event for everyone, and paying in advance saves you $3!

The link: To find out more or register, go to http://boston.polyspeeddating.com ! To ask us a question, email us at bostonpsd@polyspeeddating.com !

(I'm hoping this is okay to post here because of the post a few weeks ago about speed dating at Arisia and the issues involved with making one event for everyone. If not, feel free to delete, and my apologies!)

Our first event will be April 26 at The Friendly Toast in Kendall Square, Cambridge. As you may or may not know, if you bought your membership for Renovation before January 31st (or if you were a member of AussieCon 4), you are eligible to nominate for the Hugo Awards.

Given [livejournal.com profile] arisia's special relationship with [livejournal.com profile] eric_in_elevatr (as the first Con to have me as a Guest), plus that it is the site of a fair chunk of the footage in the short, I would like to ask you to consider nominating "Vertically-Mobile Comedy: the 'Eric in the Elevator' Story" for Dramatic Presentation, Short Form. Vimeo link

Please help me go to the Hugo Losers' Party! %-}

::thank you, and back to your original feature presentation::

P.S.: I have it on good authority that if you have already nominated, you can still add items until the voting deadline. ;-D

Help build DNA LEGO kits for Boston Public Schools!

Since a lot of Arisia folks are interested in science education, I thought this might be for interest. This work session is part of a larger project that has been going on for several months to prepare teaching materials for the Boston public schools. If you can help, please contact Kathy directly, her email is below.

And some Krazy Glue, which will be provided!

Where: 56-202 (CEHS conference room)

StrowlerCon is October 8-10 in Woburn, MA, and we are going to rock like you would not believe.

Join us in the Grand Ballrooms of the Woburn Holiday Inn, just north of Boston, on Columbus Day weekend — October 8th-10th, 2010 — for three nights of entertainment (live music, circus arts, burlesque) and two days of workshops, panels and other activities, including a special 10/10/10 celebration, and a Maker Showcase featuring inventions and material creations as well as artwork by local creators and attendees.

Who has two thumbs and an 'Official StrowlerCon Performer Coordinatrix' hat?

Me, that's who.

*Gets out cat-herding whip and stompyboots.*

OKAY THEN! This is me, making use of the awesome power that is the Intarwebs. I need performers who can, and WILL be up for performing in the Boston area in the second week of October. Specifically, I need itinerant-style, street style, alt-style performers. I need jugglers. I need magicians. I need comedians. I need acrobats and rope artists. I need firespinners and spitters. I need stiltwalkers and unicyclers, and maybe even a few blockheads and animal performance acts if I can possibly get them. And yes, there's even room for a mime or two.

The important thing is, I need them to be available, and willing to show up and play their hearts out on the weekend of October 8th, and I need them to do it on faith -- this is a startup show, and so payment's on a percentage of door status. Scary for performers who make their rent (or don't some months,) this way, but that's the best we can do until Strowler builds up some foundation in the area.

What I do NOT seem to need, are burlesquettes -- I have a metric buttload of them, between the four Boston area contacts plus the ones I know personally from this area.

I have letters of intro out to Jerkus Circus, Honey Suckle Duvet, and BabesInBoinkland -- assuming Mercury's retrograde hasn't banjaxed the whole thing. (I want it known that it has taken this event to finally FORCE me to get a MySpace account. Dammit. But not even StrowlerCon can force me to USE it.) I also have a holding pattern going with a local magician named Jeffrey Jene, and am currently combing through old correspondence between the event manager and his other acts, in search of more e mail URLs.

And I KNOW this process can only improve through the attentions of my brilliant flist.
And so, my beloved New Englanders, what Strowlers do you know, to whom you need to introduce me? I'd prefer the first rank of contacts to be with people you know, since that's usually the best way to get actual responses out of Flaky Artist Types, but honestly any contacts to such circus-type acts would be helpful at this juncture.

So whatcha got for me then?

Also? PLEASE feel free to cross-link and cross-post this to whomever you believe needs to see it. The more eyes and brains engaged in the hunt, the better the results will be.

So SHILL, BABES, SHILL!

Many of you will remember Arisia's last Music Guest of Honor, SJ Tucker. She's back in town, for a three-day extravaganza, and she's brought friends!

A more involved post later, but right now, I will quote from her manager/partner K's e-mail.

Summary: StrowlerCon is in Woburn October 8-10, with concerts and circus stuff and all manner of merriment, and it is in danger. What we need from you right now is for you to reserve your hotel room now. Today. If the room block doesn't sell enough by end of the day tomorrow, big money issues. So reserve your room now and you can work out roomshares from there, but that need is urgent.

Everything below the dotted line is from K!

-------------

Hotel rooms for StrowlerCon are still available, but we desperately need you to reserve your room in the discount block by this Friday.

Seriously, we need you to book a room at the Woburn Holiday Inn within our discount block. Call them at 781-935-8760 today. STR is the group code.

StrowlerCon is even bigger and more overwhelming that StrowlerFest. We organized this event because our fans in the North East demanded it. When we committed to this event, we were expecting more than two hundred fans to sign up right away. We _need_ you to be there. Tell your friends. Talk about it online. Call your favorite radio programs and podcasts. Spread the word by whatever means you have available, because we _need_ every one of our North East fans to know it's there.
