Arisia Programming is pleased to announce a full slate of Art and Maker workshops for 2015!

This year, we welcome the return of our popular chain mail workshops. Come learn the basics in Chainmail 101, or go to the next level with a Byzantine Weave. If you've got the basics covered, come learn how to make decorative chain flowers at the Make a Scale Flower class. Some of these classes will be offered more than once, so if you can't arrive early, you won't necessarily miss out!

Going beyond chain mail, if you've got a ton of old electronics sitting around, our Circuit Bending class will show you how to turn your old toys into new ones! In Soldering 101, you'll learn your way around a soldering iron. If fiber arts is your thing, learn to make your own Renfaire Rosette from scraps.

Please note that all workshops have limited enrollment. Sign-ups will be available at con on a first-come basis. Also, be prepared for a small materials fee. Sign-ups will be available at the Program Nexus. Also, please note that Program Nexus has moved to the Executive Boardroom. Our new location is past Registration on the Mezzanine level.

A full list of the offerings in the Art and Maker Track are available on our website: http://www.arisia.org/Tracks#ArtMaker. For our full schedule in multiple formats, please go to http://www.arisia.org/publications#Schedule.

Arisia recently informed previous panel participants of a change in Programming policy, reducing the number of potential participants invited to be a panelist for Arisia 2015. We've received some feedback, most of it positive, some not, and wish to address some of that publicly.

First, some additional background. Instituting a process like this is something that the staff of Arisia has discussed for several years. This is the first year that we have done so. Last year, we had fewer programming slots for panels than in previous years, but interest in being a panelist was greater than ever. We found ourselves in the enviable position of having many more amazing and qualified potential participants than we had panels for them to do. This situation has not changed as the number of talented people interested in participating in Programming at Arisia continues to grow every year. For Arisia 2015, we made the difficult decision to scale back the number of people that we invite to be panelists.

The reasons for this are simple. We want to make sure that we have the best-qualified and most diverse group of panelists we can find. We cannot schedule everybody that would like to participate, as there simply aren’t enough panels to go around. We also need to make sure that the selection process doesn’t overwhelm our staff. For the majority of panels, we easily got three to four times as much interest in a panel as we had slots to fill. This complicates the selection process and puts a great deal of stress on our all-volunteer staff. By reducing the size of the pool, we will also reduce the demand on the staff.

Some past participants expressed concern that our selection process would result in only well-connected people getting invites, or that past personal conflicts would skew our choices. Our staff has spent considerable time going through our database, striving to select the very best candidates that reflect Arisia’s diverse interests, knowledge, skills and backgrounds. Multiple people, with many years of experience, collectively worked together to ensure that our process was as pure of intent as we could make it. We did everything we could to make the process as fair as possible.

We also received several emails expressing concern that people who will not receive an invite will simply be ignored. Our plan is to inform everyone that applied to be a panelist for the upcoming con, including all invitees and participants from Arisia 2014, whether or not they are invited to participate again. This process is almost finished, and decision letters will be going out soon. We ask all previous participants to please be patient while we complete this difficult task.

Finally, we also received some letters asking if those who are not selected as a potential participant can register at the earlier rates. As mentioned, this is the first year we've gone through all of our candidates like this, and it has proven more time intensive then expected. Panelist invite letters have been delayed by several weeks. During this time, the deadline for early registration has passed. In light of that, all potential participants who received an invitation to be a panelist for 2014, and therefore expected but are not receiving one for 2015, will have an opportunity to register for Arisia at the previous registration rate.

We welcome any and all comments, ideas or criticisms to improve this process. Please direct all correspondence to programming@arisia.org. Thank you.

Micah Schneider

The below announcement was sent to program participants last night, but a bulk mail failure meant it did not reach all the recipients. We'll be following up as soon as possible with additional status updates. As soon as the problem gets fixed, we will make the appropriate extension of the deadline.

To all potential Arisia Program Participants:

Thank you to those who have bid on panels thus far.

If you have yet to do so, please log in and bid in the next 24 hours. Please note that we will not consider you for a program item if you do not rate it as well as include a few sentences as to why you would be a good fit for the panel.

If you were one of the many who logged in and signed up for panels in the first few days after we went live, you are awesome, but please check back in. Fast Track (children's programming) and Music Track had many selections that were not immediately visible, due to an error on our end.

Arisia Programming Staff will begin preliminary assignments this week. This will only take into consideration the information you provide through Zambia. Workshop assignments will be considered over the next two weeks.

In November, we will put together the full preliminary schedule, and we will make changes and substitutions as necessary. This preliminary schedule will be released for your comment and review in late November (before Thanksgiving).

The final schedule will be released in mid-December. Registration Division will then offer full comp memberships to Arisia 2014 to all panelists who have been scheduled for 3 or more items. Registration will offer day memberships for those panelists booked for 1 or 2 panels. All panelists who did not earn full comps will be offered the chance to upgrade to full memberships at the September rate, even if you were not assigned to any panels, as thanks for participating in this process. Comp memberships are non-transferable. If you have already paid for an Arisia 2014 membership, you may transfer it to another member, or you may roll it forward for one year only.

Please go to http://zambia.2014.arisia.org/ and log in using your badge number. Your original default password was "changeme". If you need a password reset, please let us know at programming@arisia.org.

If you have already indicated that you will not be able to attend Arisia 2014, this will be the last email you receive from us this year. Unless you tell us otherwise, we will be happy to consider you again for Arisia 2015.

Thanks again,

Arisia Programming Staff"

Greetings!

As we are getting closer to Arisia '13, I am once again compiling the Family Friendly Guide to Arisia! It will contain Do's and Dont's, a review of policies for children and parents, and some highlights of the con that will appeal to the family, besides Turtle Track and Fast Track.

That's where you come in. If you are throwing a party, or running an event at con that you think is great for the whole family, let me know and I will put it in the guide! Last year we had items such as Tea Parties, the Geeky Belly Dance Show, and Higgins Armory demonstrations.

Look for the guide to be available electronically soon, and the hard copy at Arisia.

Thank you,
Dale Meyer-Curley

Hi.

I signed up to be a panelist at Arisia and I have been put on 3 panels at this point. Due to expenses, I cannot justify going to Arisia this year. Does anyone know whom I should inform.

I would like to be able to get my name off of the list of panelists before the programs are printed up and I don't want to leave anyone in the lurch. If it's possible to find replacements for me on the panels, I would also like that to happen.

We will be offering limited ASL interpretation at Arisia this year, by request. We have reserved the services of two interpreters for Saturday and Sunday, 10am-5pm (and they'll need a break for lunch in there somewhere). However, if you need ASL interpretation, we must know by 12/31 or we will have to cancel the reservation. Please email access@arisia.org for details, or if you are interested in volunteering or taking advantage of this service.

Any attendee who wishes to bring an interpreter with them for the day, can apply for a free ""Adult-in-tow membership for the interpreter.

We will be holding two ASL “Meet and Greet sessions” at the con to which all signers are welcome. We will have one Saturday morning at 11am, and one Sunday morning at 11am, location to be announced. All signers and levels of experience are welcome.

We will also have ASL awareness pins this year, a small black and white pin for con attendees to wear to indicate that they know some sign language. We will distribute these at the “Meet and Greet sessions”, and also at the Information Desk. we hope you'll wear these pins to other cons as well!

Thank you for your time!

Please email access@arisia.org if you have any questions!

Last January, we arranged a BARCC (Boston Area Rape Crisis Center) workshop on responding to sexual harassment that was very well received and we promised to do it again this year.
We have arranged to have a workshop from BARCC on the topic of responding to reports of harassment within the community for Boskone & Arisia staff, and anyone else interested. It will be on Tuesday, December 11th, at the NESFA Clubhouse, at 7:30pm.

Detailed description:
Many people have had the experience of receiving a disclosure from an adult about experiences of sexual violence. The research is clear that peoples’ responses to disclosures can be critical in shaping the course of healing for survivors. This highly interactive skill-based workshop will explore common reactions to sexual violence (whether recent or long in the past), issues of secondary trauma, and a tool for responding appropriately and effectively. Additionally the training will cover activities that focus on challenging inappropriate sexual and violent behaviors in one'’s community and environment. *Please note that this is different from the usual work-provided harassment training.*

The clubhouse is at 504 Medford St., Somerville; parking is in the rear (359 Lowell St), or on the street (4 quarters/hour until 8pm). More directions at http://www.nesfa.org/clubhouse/location.html.

Please DO plan to arrive before 7:30 PM (but after 7 PM) so that we can start on time. RSVPs appreciated but not required (kovalcik@alum.mit.edu) so that we can get an idea of how many handouts to have them prepare.

Arisia is so awesome, we just have to get started on programming in August! For getting ideas for Programming we've created a Brainstorm web forum.

Unlike the old mailing list, which has been retired, this year the Brainstorm forum will stay open year-round. Would you like to suggest Programming ideas for the upcoming convention?

If so, please check out our new Brainstorm forums at http://forums.arisia.org/. To suggest ideas, sign up and create a user ID and then send an email to forums@arisia.org to ask for posting privileges.

If you have any last minute ideas you want us to consider, please post to the Brainstorming forum by 8/21/2012. That is the soft close deadline for ideas for Arisia 2013. After that date you can still submit ideas but, we can no longer guarantee we will be able to consider your idea for Arisia 2013, though we will certainly do our best to upload your post-deadline Eureka! moments. Any ideas not used for Arisia 2013 can still be used for future years. Thank you to all who have submitted ideas already.

If you have any questions, please email programming@arisia.org

Thank you,
Arisia Programming

Do you have a good idea of something you would like to see at Arisia?

We have just opened a semi-open brainstorming forum for programming suggestions. It will close later this summer so that we can sift through the hundreds of suggestions we receive to make them ready for the convention.

Have an idea that isn't a panel? You can also post about event ideas, games you would like to play, or any films, videos or anime you would like to see.

Note from the Acting Head of Programming

We have decided to close the mailing list and convert our brainstorming process to forums. You are therefore cordially invited to be among the first to sign up for the brand-new Arisia forums, http://forums.arisia.org/ .

For the moment, brainstorming will be held in a limited-access sub-forum. Once you've registered, send an email to [forums at arisia.org] requesting permission to join the brainstorm group. The site is live now, so start storming away!

We apologize for the late start this year, but with the new capabilities a webforum allows us, we should be much better organized when it comes the time to import everything into our custom scheduling software.

If you have any questions about the process, send an email to [programming at arisia.org] for administrative issues or [forums at arisia.org] for technical issues.

As always, thank you for your commitment to improving programming at Arisia!

Sincerely,

Jaime Garmendia
(Acting) Division Head, Programming
Arisia 2013

Guidelines for Brainstorming

Basic rules and information for the Arisia Brainstorming forum.
Be Civil. No trolling, flames, baiting etc.
No spam or advertising.
Stay positive and constructive. Nitpicking ideas apart doesn't help the process.
When submitting an idea, please put the panel/lecture/etc. title in the Subject/Title line.
Keep it one idea per thread. Don't submit a bunch of ideas in one post.
Just because an idea is submitted doesn't guarantee it will run at con.
Posting an idea is not the same as being invited to be a program participant.
If Arisia uses an idea, it doesn't mean the person who suggested it will be scheduled to be on it.
No single person determines whether an idea runs or not. Several factors and people are involved in making final decisions on content.

To be considered for an invitation to be an Arisia program participant, please send the following information to programming at arisia.org.

* Full Name
* Preferred email address
* Alternate method of contact (other email or phone number)
* How you heard about us
* A brief bio introducing yourself, your area of expertise, and other conventions/events you’ve participated in as a panelist/lecturer/presenter. The bio need not be extensive. A short paragraph will do.

We regret that we cannot invite all who request, nor schedule for program items all who are invited.

Just in case people missed it, I wanted to call attention to our first ever miniatures painting contest. The contest is Monday morning at 10:00am - 11:00am in Paine. We have some excellent prize support from Reaper, so come give it a try. We are also offering a prize for young participants so don't stay away thinking you can't compete with the adults.

Anybody with an Arisia membership is welcome to come see the miniatures and vote. Lots of voting will make for a great contest. Don't leave it to the contestants to decide their own fate!

If you want to enter, you should preregister at the program nexus. Monday morning, please try to arrive by 9:45, so that we can get your miniature on display, and you will need to be there at 11:00 to pick up your entries and any prizes. We are not responsible for unclaimed miniatures.

You can find detailed rules here.
http://2012.arisia.org/MiniaturesPaintingContestRules

Thanks, and I am looking forward to seeing your miniatures.

Hello everyone!

I am making a handout for people interested in the family-friendly side of Arisia. I'll be listing the events and programs that aren't already covered by Fast Track, as well as some dos and don't s.

I'm looking for any input from panelists/event hosts that would like me to include their item on the flyer. So far, I'll be listing the Geeky Play Dates, the Geeky Belly Dance, and Drum Circle.

What I am looking for are things parents/guardians can do with their kids. I'm not looking for things that little ones are dropped off at.

All suggestions welcome!

  • Interested in seeing which Dealers will be attending Arisia this year? Take a peek at our Dealers Room list.

  • Still need a hotel room? Information about our overflow hotels has been posted to the site.

  • Participants!

Participant schedules are currently available by signing into Zambia. If you find that you are on any sessions that do not work for your schedule, please let us know ASAP so that we can correct them. For the past few weeks we have been hard at work removing schedule conflicts and fulfilling participant requests and will continue to do so. Please log in and check your schedule. Items may have been added or removed. We are not quite at the final schedule stage, but we are approaching it quickly. Your assistance in this matter is greatly appreciated.

Just a reminder about registration, Programming will be automatically requesting programming comps for participants on at least 3 sessions. You don't need to do anything further for this to go through. If you are on 1-2 sessions you get your choice of a day pass or a reduced weekend membership. If you would like the day pass, please contact program@arisia.org as soon as possible so that we can start processing it for you. If you would like the reduced rate, you just need to sit tight a little longer, and we will be getting the link info out to those in that situation shortly,
