Have a great idea for Arisia 2016? Come to the open brainstorm session on Sunday, July 26th at 2pm at The Westin Boston Waterfront Hotel in the Stone Room (Lobby Level, down the hall just past the Starbucks). Representatives from programming, events, and the other departments within Arisia will be there to hear and talk with you about your ideas.

Want to become more involved in Arisia? This is a great opportunity to meet with members of the Arisia Leadership Team and talk about the various ways in which you can contribute.

Can't make this session? Contribute panel ideas on the Arisia brainstorm forum Have an idea outside of "traditional" SF/F convention panel format? Send your proposals to proposals@arisia.org

We hope to see you there!

Greetings!

As we are getting closer to Arisia '13, I am once again compiling the Family Friendly Guide to Arisia! It will contain Do's and Dont's, a review of policies for children and parents, and some highlights of the con that will appeal to the family, besides Turtle Track and Fast Track.

That's where you come in. If you are throwing a party, or running an event at con that you think is great for the whole family, let me know and I will put it in the guide! Last year we had items such as Tea Parties, the Geeky Belly Dance Show, and Higgins Armory demonstrations.

Look for the guide to be available electronically soon, and the hard copy at Arisia.

Thank you,
Dale Meyer-Curley

Hi everyone!

As we have for the past 7 years, The Post-Meridian Radio Players will be performing at Arisia. Until recently, our shows were on Sunday afternoons, bur we switched to Friday nights in 2011. Just about the only downside to that has been less time to publicize the show around the hotel, so I've taken to posting something here a couple weeks prior to the con.

The Day the Earth Stood StillThis year, we're going to be performing our radio adaptation of the iconic 1951 sci-fi film, The Day the Earth Stood Still, which we performed as part of our live spring show last year. The show features, along with many PMRP regulars, a very well-known face from numerous past Arisias: that of Blood Drive faceman, John C.F. Hodges, in the role of Klaatu.

The show was very well received last May, and we have hopes that it will garner the same kind of appreciation at Arisia! John's performance was really amazing.

The show begins at 10:00pm on Friday night in Grand Ballroom AB.

We're having an In-character Speed Dating game show at Arisia this year. Come in character and in costume as any being from any story, show, or otherwise that you'd like to be.

Our MC (Scratch) will run this event game-show style, setting up the characters with speed-date style interactions before a live audience. In the end, the applause-o-meter will determine which pair the audience thought did the best. The winning pair of characters will get a free dinner!

If you want to play a part in this game show, go fill out our form here: http://2013.arisia.org/speeddatingGameShow

I am starting a youth swordsmanship program for middle and high school students in Acton, Ma.

I have been teaching swordsmanship at Arisia's fast track program for four years. Every year, a half dozen parents ask me, "Do you run a regular, weekly class?" The answer is now, "Yes."

Registration is available online at SwordsofChivalry.com.

I made a YouTube playlist of the Saturday Night Dance! I tried to avoid videos that had ads that played before the song so that song could play right away. I think I could not find one video, so i picked an alternate. You can always explore the other versions or mixes on there.

As announced on this LJ and other places, the Carl Brandon Awards for 2008 and 2009 were awarded. It was a highlight of the convention for me to hear from, and when lucky, meet in person, these talented winners.

As I got to find out more about the winning books and stories:
Half World by Hiromi Goto
Liar by Justine Larbalestier
Distances by Vandana Singh
"Ghost Summer" by Tananarive Due
I became excited about reading them. Below, you can read the jury statements about the winners, which were read at the awards ceremony. I hope they will introduce people who were unable to be there to these fascinating books.

The Masquerade is a costume contest and display of creativity by your fellow convention members. Entrants may dress in anything interesting and fun so long as they can motor themselves across the stage and back. You'll find a variety of BEMs (Bug Eyed Monsters!), Transformers, faeries, royals, dragons, cosplayers (anime-inspired costumes), movie and TV characters, and just plain silly people in costume. This is a judged event and is a highlight of Arisia. If you're not competing, come see the fabulous display of creativity by your fellow fen. All entries are judged in three separate categories (Novice, Journeyman, and Craftsman/ Master) to give everyone a fair chance.

Online Masquerade signup is now open!

Come join us for a Breakfast Buffet with your favorite Guest of Honor or special guest!

The Breakfast Buffet will be Sunday morning (January 16, 2011) at 11AM.

Tickets for the Breakfast Buffet are $35 and now available on our site.

This will be a great opportunity at the convention to sit down and chat with your choice of a fannish "person of interest," such as one of our Guests of Honor. In total, we plan to have 12 tables of 8 persons each; at each table will be a special guest. We are currently working with Programming to identify and schedule the special participants. As soon as that is done, we will be sending out a notification to all those who have already purchased their banquet tickets so they can identify their top four choices of tables. This is definitely a first-come, first-served event, so buy your ticket early if you want to make sure you get your top choice!

We're pleased to announce our list of special guests at the Breakfast.

Michael Anderson – Art/Entertainment
Kelley Armstrong - Writer GOH, Literature
Bob Eggleton – Art, Media

[livejournal.com profile] majes (and [livejournal.com profile] jasra), you guys rock. So much. Thanks for making events happen in an organized fashion this year!

(Please note: the org chart lists the organizer or contact person of each event, which is not necessarily the same as the performer(s) in question.)

Calling all high school artists: enter our student art contest!

This is a free contest, open to all secondary school students. Cash prizes ($800 total) will be awarded for the best science fiction or fantasy-themed artwork. There are no entry or exhibition fees, and no "gotcha"s. We simply wish to recognize, celebrate and encourage outstanding student art. Students who wish can also choose to put their art up for sale.

For 2011, the convention theme is Mad Science. Students are free to submit entries using either the convention theme or any other Science Fiction or Fantasy theme for inspiration.

For more information, please see the Student Art Contest letter and entry form or http://2011.arisia.org/StudentArtContest. (submissions due by Dec 27)

Just a couple of quick notes:

We're trying a new event on for size this year -- a breakfast buffet event with GOHs and other Special Guests (including Seanan McGuire, Cat Valente, Hildy Silverman, Frank Wu, and others)! Breakfast price is comparable to prices in the hotel restaurant, with the added bonus of cool conversation! Go to http://2011.arisia.org/buffet for tickets & more info.

Turtle Track (childcare) is currently full. To get on the waiting list, email reg@arisia.org with "Turtle Track" in the subject line. Every year, there are some cancellations, so don't despair if you haven't yet signed up, just do it asap. (Same is true for hotel reservations, actually. Last year, we ended up with a couple of empty rooms in the main hotel, due to cancellations.)

Speaking of hotel reservations: The hotel has turned off the public reservations page while we sort through the Waiting List together. We're working on an alternate solution for getting reservations into their system, but the meantime, please have patience. We expect to have a further update tomorrow night, after more conferring with the hotel.
