The finding and publishing of "For Us, the Living"

by Deb Houdek Rule

As of this writing, August 31, 2003, there are only about half a dozen people in the entire known universe who can accurately claim that they have read every novel Heinlein has written.

For those of us who thought there would never again be another new Heinlein novel, the impossible has become reality . "For Us, the Living," is a brand new, never before published novel by Robert A. Heinlein. It is going into print now for the first time and will be in bookstores by the end of November, 2003.

"For Us, the Living" was written by Heinlein about 1938-9, before he wrote his first sf short, "Lifeline." The novel, "For Us, the Living," was deemed unpublishable, mainly for the racy content. So racy is/was the content that in the 1930s the book could not even have been legally shipped through the US mail! For this reason, after a few publisher rejections, the novel was tabled by Heinlein, but the content was mined for his later stories and novels. A fellow named Nehemiah Scudder even appears in "For Us, the Living." It's important to point out that according to those favored few who have thus far read this long lost Heinlein novel, it did not go unpublished because it was bad--they say it's quite good, though clearly a first novel by the author (it has a two and a half page footnote!). It was unpublished because the mores and culture of the time would not allow it.

here's a question...

why is it that I'm not on the Arisia staff list... ;) after all, I'll no doubt be staffing SOMEHOW for Arisia, as soon as someone tells me where they need me.

Meant to ask Noel or Carsten where they needed help last weekend, but we were all partying and/or getting drunk and/or having a good time, and the thought didn't occur to me when I had them right there.

Silly me.

Yeah...this post really fits in the "be careful what you ask for."

Pretty much the boundary conditions are:

(a) no [or minimal] pre-con driving to Arisia...I can talk Pam into one weekend trip up pre-con to work/meet/prep/etc., but not several...can do pre-con work remotely from here in the wilds of Jersey [web work, letters, phone calls, etc.]

(b) Cannot take SO much time at-con that Pam will divorce me for abandoning her with a rambunctious three-year old...of course, since Quinn is fairly well-loved by Arisia's Keepers of the Munchkins, he'll probably spend a good bit of time there

Other than that, I'm "all" yours...

Things I've done "in my day": security, volunteer wrangling, speaker to mundanes, registration, oh, hell...except for actually coordinating hospitality functions like green room/con suite, and doing active techno-fandom work [though my college theater tech work would probably come back to me, if needed]...actually...

feh, whatever...name the job, I'm a smart guy...if I haven't done it before, I'll figure it out.
