I'm glad the author found a good group of folk. The article does cause me to wonder about badge/admission policies at Arisia events.

I was under the impression that a badge was required to get into con events (e.g. the dance) and an invitation (usually passed around freely, but still) was required for room parties. I thought that the con and the hotel considered all room parties to be "private" and "closed".

Am I wrong about that? Can someone from Arisia concom or hotel liaison comment? Also, I'm wondering if we have a more closed policy than DetCon had - is that due to our agreement with the hotel? Are there MA laws/regulations we're required to follow here?

There's a lot of history in that area, dating back to the Boskone From Hell and before. Many compromises have been tried in the mumble years since then.

Arisia has two kinds of parties: "open" and "closed". Closed parties are invitation only. Open parties are open to all Arisia members. Whether nonmembers can enter an open party is up to the person hosting the party (it's their room, after all.) Massachusetts law, hotel policies and Arisia policies limit/prevent alcohol use at open parties. Talk to any current or former Arisia party czar for more details about the complexities of open/closed parties, laws, etc. They can talk your ear off on the subject...

As far as I can tell, Arisia's open parties are as open as they can be given the complexity of the laws and rules that govern such things. I don't think I've ever seen anyone who wasn't drunk or disorderly get turned away from an open party, but that's an extremely small data set.
