The Park Plaza has lovely ballrooms, reminiscent of the turn of the (last) century...
Unfortunately, many of their rooms are also 100 years old. Some have only baths or showers. Many are small, and the wiring is old--don't plan on running a high-powered hairdryer. The beds are a bit smaller than what you'd expect (that single bed really only sleeps one, unless they're kids or very skinny). Oh, and there's no pool. But if you're coming to the con to luxuriate in a hotel room, you'd be better off somewhere else.
If you really want luxury, the Four Seasons hotel--one of Boston's finest--is a block away. Rack rate (weekend) is $425/night. By comparison, you can at room at the con for under $100.
Be honest when you send in the hotel request, and tell them exactly how many people (including children) you'll have. They don't charge per person. There are some Queens that fit a family of four, because they have a sleep sofa and are larger, better than some doubles.
The hotel will not charge you extra for the extra bodies.
The hotel will not charge you extra for the extra bodies. The hotel's registration website seems to think otherwise. The room reservation website gave a price of $238 for a Standard Double for 2 nights for 3 people as opposed to $288 for the same thing but 4 people. I have no idea why, but since I don't mind sharing a key with my boyfriend, and these particular 4 people will manage just fine with 2 double beds, regardless of how much or how little floor space there is.
If you are an undergraduate, or otherwise poor and have no objections to some people sleeping on the floor, a double double can fit six mildly comfortably, not counting the bathroom rush that occurs if you all get up at the same time.
Packing more than that is Unfortunate, and cots (as they call them) are limited and go fast.
We're goin to have 4 in a double double, and yes, we are all undergraduates. The cots are terrible. I slept on one for one night the first year I went to Arisia, and realized that that I would have been more comfortable sleeping on on the bare floor.
The best descriptions are under Room Types and Rates (http://2006.arisia.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=29&Itemid=54) on the Arisia site. It's hard to get more detailed than that because there are variations in size within the same room type, depending where it is on the floor (the hotel is triangular).
