Or was it my 2nd and a half, seeing I went to the mini-Arisia at Noreascon?

In any case, here's my post about it here.

I did my volunteer time in Ops behind the desk. If I wasn't answering phones or going "ah, um....lemme see where that info is...," I was knitting (a pink scarf, then a Dr. Who scarf). I'm glad I did it, because it gave me much more perspective in what went into running a successful con. I was in awe and impressed with how issues were dealt with.

Speaking of knitting, a noticed a plethora of knitters walking around the con. I also overheard a woman suggest having a panel that was a "stash swap." Or, like at Noreascon, have knitting circles meet in the Con Suite.

Until next con!
Dee/Cee

People have been wondering what the "Next Big Thing To Show Up In Fandom" will be. You know, the thing that isn't REALLY about SF, but that so many people in fandom do that it becomes part of Arisia -- like Rennasance dance and stuff like that.

And knitting is a strong frontrunner.

"next big thing" - giggle

fan's aren't allowed to have lives and hobbies that don't revolve around cons and stuff? hee hee.

hopefully, people will do what they want, rather than "me too"

But isn't it odd how many of your friends have picked up knitting in the past five years?

not really. it's a national trend. hell, international. there's been a revival even. not just fandom.

some folx are thinking it has to do with comforts in a modern world, a response to 9/11, nurturing, ... stuff...

the positive benefit of it is: lots of stores and LOTS of materials to work with. new materials, better old materials, variety!

as for me, i made a passel of harry potter scarves as my cross-over thing. those were happily received, but mostly by YOUNG people :> the 16 foot "dr who" like scarf i made, bah, nobody wants that ;) "doctor... who?"

Okay, maybe not odd. But, well, if EVERYBODY's knitting anyway, then why not knit at cons, too? I mean, since everyone's already knitting at cons, anyway, why not do panels on it?

As opposed to, say, LiveJournal panels? ;-)

Oh, I saw you in Ops!

I am one of the knitters. I was the one with the daisy floral fabric bag, with a multicolor, triangular wool cape going on inside. I'm an "ambitious beginner."

I think a knitting circle or two would be wonderful. I might even be willing to set it up, once the Arisia Season rolls around again.

I don't knit, but if you'll welcome some other crafty-types, I'd be interested in hanging out in the Con Suite and catching up on some of my stitching. :)

Awesome. I'm in, then! :)

And if it comes down to it... my boyfriend and I thoroughly enjoyed being upgraded to a suite. So much so that we'll definitely consider just outright reserving one next year (it was so comfortable... especially when preparing notes for the panels I was on!)

If that's the case, then there will be a living room available for unscheduled knitting... or a klatch.

*I* think knitting circles would be great! (says she who was in Fast Track all con...) I brought several projects with me, but never had the time to work on them.

Priscilla O. had a fiber arts circle at Boskone last year, in the con suite, that kept growing and growing and growing. I am told there was one at Lunacon because of that one. And I told her she had to schedule them for N4, so there was at least one knitting/needlework/spinning circle/day in a variety of locations at N4. Terry Pratchett is very much into spinning (he bought a sheep farm in Wales), and attended the circle in the Mended Drum. I think I mentioned the idea to Sheila for this Arisia, but obviously it got lost in the shuffle.

Definitely put this into the mix for next year, but because it isn't *traditionally* part of the con, one division (it doesn't matter which) would have to *own* it to make sure it got into the pocket program. They could be scheduled in the Con Suite, or on the Mezzanine...

I talked with Ben about this. He says that space is at a premium during the day on Saturday, but consider grabbing a room on Friday night for a knitting circle. I'd be happy to arrange it... and hey, if it counts as an "Exhibit" Ben will own it...
