I've got a double at the Westin that I don't need. Any takers?

The tactile tour of the Arisia art show will be taking place on Saturday from 5-6:15 PM. Attendees will meet outside of the art show and cotton gloves will be provided. Sighted folks are welcome but if the size of the group becomes an issue, priority will be given to people with disabilities. Artists are invited to be present to briefly describe their work and answer questions.

Also, the question of whether service animals required badges came up earlier this week and the answer is that, while in the past Arisia has provided badges for services animals as a courtesy to the human attendees, badges are not required for service animals and, as badge materials are in short supply this year, will not be provided to service animals this year.

I have a reservation that I didn't cancel in time. I am not arriving until tomorrow, thus I have a room at the Westin tonight that I am not going to use. If anyone is in town early (or just in Boston anyways) and needs a room, let me know. I'll give it away for free if it comes down to it, but preference goes to anyone who offers $$.

I am coming from out of town and arriving in South Station. It looks like I can walk to the Westin from South Station but it also looks like I would have to cross over 4 major highways to do it. Hopstop also recommends taking the Silver Line which would take longer than walking and still potentially involve walking over major highways. What is the best way to get to the Westin from South Station? Is there walking over major highways involved anywhere or I am just reading the map incorrectly?

(I have found Hopstop to be extremely reliable in NYC but not very reliable in Boston which is also why I am asking here.)

Thank you

Hello everyone,

Since Arisia is just days away, I thought it would be good to post up about 2 panels I'm doing this Sunday.

At 12:30 PM I'll be doing "Thermoforming: Bending Plastic to your Will"

One of the common questions stormtroopers get is about making the armor. This panel will be focused on thermoforming plastics: Heating it up, pulling it over a mold and using a vacuum to pull in fine details.

My goal for this presentation is to walk through the basics of how it all works, and provide examples of equipment ranging from salvaged home appliances to commercial grade formers.

I'll be bringing a table top vacuum forming machine built from a broken bread machine, and power willing will be able to do some live demonstrations.

At 3:30 PM I'll be doing another one about mold making and resin casting.

This will also be a fairly "hands on" panel in that I'll have molds and fast curing resin on hand so that we can actually cast up some simple pieces right there. Be careful, I may be looking for a volunteer assistant!

I'll also be giving away a molding and casting starter kit that includes silicone for the mold, resin to cast, an instructional DVD and more, donated to me by my local supplier, Reynolds Advanced Materials in Brighton.

We've got a dozen so far that have taken advantage of the blood-drive@arisia.org email alias. Hurrah! Already breaking records! We have two buses coming from MGH on Saturday and one from Children's on Sunday, so our goal is 180 donations! So far, the first time slot, 9:30a on Saturday, is the only one that's full, with four donors. Let's fill 9:40a now! Thanks, all!

Got some books you write or personal, hand-made art to sell? There are still a few spaces for Monday in the author & artist alley. If you're an author doing a signing at Arisia, you can have use of a table near autographing to have a minion sell your books for only $5, only during your autographing time. These slots are payable by cash/check only.

To sign up, ask for Lisa Hertel in the Galleria, or at Ops.

In case any of you are arriving early enough to check this out before Arisia officially starts ...

The Museum of Science is showing free IMAX films for everyone all day tomorrow (Friday, January 14). Tickets are first come, first serve, and you have to pick them up in person at the museum's box office. Limit two movies per customer.

The museum is near Science Park station on the MBTA Green Line.

Tomorrow's film schedule... )
