I know last year's elevator problems were part of the pain of adapting to a new venue.

I do have a question, though.

I have severe arthritis in my left hip, and while I can manage a couple of flights of stairs throughout the day, I cannot do a lot of stairs at one time, and I can't do them too often. The result is an increase in the already constant pain, at which point, why bother going to the con? Anyone who has dealt with this kind of issue knows that when the pain increases, and there's no real relief (and really, there is no relief without life-threatening drugs or surgery that I'm not old enough for, yet), not only is everything unpleasant, but ability to cope with just about any issues is greatly diminished.

Has any consideration been made for people with mobility issues for this year? I have already conceded that I just can't go to the art show, because I can't stand long enough to wait for the elevator. Last year there was one chair by the elevator, and when I sat it in, I got some pretty damning remarks from someone older who thought I was being disrespectful.

So, yeah, that's where I am. Again, thoughts?

disclaimer: I am not one of the organizers. Nothing in this post, nor in any of the threads contained herein is official, unless otherwise noted by someone who IS an oganizer. Everything I say here is merely a suggestion in order to reduce congestion in the elevators, and make the world a better place for people for whom the stairs are not a viable option.

Shortly after the end of the con last year, there was discussion of a "StairMaster Club" being organized by able-bodied individuals to allow those for whom the stairs are not an option to take the elevators with greater ease. StairMaster is a copyrighted word, so I will only be using the term "Stair Club".

The original announcement requested that people get in shape over the course of the year, so that for this upcoming Arisia, only those who are inconsiderate and those who are unable to take the stairs will be using the elevators. If you missed the previous announcement, there is still time! Get in shape now, so that everyone can enjoy the con as much as possible!

Once again, as we were reminded when this was originally posted, do NOT make discouraging remarks, comments, looks, or jokes to people who are taking the elevator, even if they appear to be able-bodied. First of all, the number of invisible things that can keep a person from taking a flight of stairs is astronomical, so do not assume. Secondly, the goal of this group is to make the con MORE fun for everyone, not less.

Just to clarify, the problem with the elevators last year has to do with the doors.

If you hold the door open with anything other than the "door open" butotn, then it mucks with the elevator mechanisms and can bump the door out of its track.

If you lean against the doors, it mucks with the elevator mechanisms and can bump the door out of its track.

So, don't touch the doors. Ever. Use the "door open" button.

We'll be posting signs at the con, but if you start spreading the word, that'll help too.

I found no gaming panels in the list on Zambia.

Was I looking in the wrong place?

I know that there are restaurants listed in the con booklet thingy. Does anyone know if take out is listed (I don't remember there being any listed.)? If not since the Hyatt is so far away from eating places and the transport is infrequent (At least in comparison to the Park Plaza.) could take out places be listed this year in the booklet? If that is not possible at this juncture can anyone recommend good take out places that deliver to the Hyatt? Does anyone know if whoever arranged for the food carts outside is going to arrange for them again? Those were a great idea.

Does anyone know if the monogamy panel is happening this year? It happened 2 years ago and I found it enjoyable. I am not a panelist so I cannot check on Zambia.

Revised note: shortly after (before?) I posted this, the problem was fixed, so you can now go to Zambia to see the 21 awesome gaming panels

In answer to the question that has been going around: yes, there are gaming panels. I, the Program DivHead, own a game store which vends at the con. You can be quite assured that a slim gaming schedule is not my intention.

But, why can't I see them? you ask.

That would be a long a complex technical answer... which I do not have. What I do have a is a quick and dirty listing of 21 gaming panels in an ugly HTML file which can be found at http://www.pvfen.org/gamingpanels.html

If you are a panelist, you can email me at program(at)arisia(dot)org with the gaming panels that you would like to be on. Please also include an indication from 1 to 5 of how interested you are, if you are interested in moderating, and a short bit on why you would be good on that panel.

If you are not currently a panelist but believe that you can speak intelligently on the topics presented, you can also email me. Please also include your name, address, email, phone and an explanation of why you are qualified to be a panelist as well as the above info on which panels you want.

Just so we are very clear. The panels on that list are under consideration. Normally we do not put out the precis to the public, but desperate technical difficulties call for desperate measures. So, no whining if you see a panel you like there and it does not run. Most likely it's because we didn't get enough panelists for it or it was among the 200 panels we had to cut.
