[identity profile] lifecollage.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] arisia
Hello, all. It looks like we've got our first coverage in the press and it's very positive (Arisia = fun!).

ETA: First, Annalee Newitz blogged a bit of Saturday of the con at Wired.

Today, the Weekly Dig has a post-mortem by Shaula Clark on their blog.

With luck, we'll get some new blood out of this for 2008!

Which will be great as long as we don't hit the membership cap again.

...filk music is sort of a Weird Al take on sci-fi tropes...

Fairly typical media accuracy. I suppose we should be grateful that Shaula Clark has heard of Weird Al.

hehehe thanks for putting that link up

Speaking of the leopard girl on the dance floor... did anyone happen to snap some pictures of me at the skanks party before the whiskers fell off?

Oh goodness, one of them showed up at the Dr. Who Meet-up I was in charge of! I'm amazed he found it since it was a quite late addition to the schedule, really. I wonder which person he was? And the party mentioned in the blog was indeed the well-known-by-now Skanks in Space party.

Cool... she mentioned one of my panels (the steampunk one)

After going back through the article a third time I think that the Weekly Dig article does do a good job of covering the many different things one can see at Arisia, but I still feel uncomfortable about the fact that she starts and ends the article with attractive, scantily-clad people letting loose. The first time I read through the article, the only thought I took from it was dismay that she focused Arisia on sex. I read it over again, but I think that many people unfamiliar to cons will not. They'll skim the article once and disregard all of the information about the panels, the music, the art, and the costumes because that information is bracketed with details of parties where you can see barely-naked folks writhing around. I am worried about the kind of "New Blood" the article will bring in if that is seen as the main attraction with no interest in to what the rest of the con has to offer.

Yeah, it kind of made Arisia sound like the Burning Man or something. If that sort of thing is going on at Arisia, I'm obviously doing the wrong stuff at the con. :D

Okay, I know. I'm not attractive enough to get into the Skanks party. Which for some reason makes me want to reformulate one of my favorite Charlie Brown lines:

"I know I'm old and unattractive. Why do we have to have a Skanks In Space party to emphasize it?"

you know you don't need to be attractive or young to get into the skanks parties...all you need is a costume.

Actually, I was mostly (or at least partly) kidding. When I dress up in my formalwear (as I did on Friday night), I know I look pretty good. Heck one of my most cherished memories is of an Arisia several years ago in which I was walking towards the elevators in my white tie and tails; an absolutely gorgeous young woman was staring at me, and literally walked into a wall.

Okay, maybe she was just wondering why I was dressed up that way. But I prefer to think that I looked good. Image

The truth is, I'd feel weird at the Skanks party. I AM 42, after all. And my wife would definitely not be comfortable there...I think.

Needless to say, if I went to it without my wife, I'd have some serious 'splaining to do. Image

(Although come to think of it, my son might enjoy it...but he's five years old. Is there an age limit to enter?)

I think its adults only. Despite some of the rumors the people are not a couple of skeezy guys trying to get hot young girls to their rooms, alternately they are not a group of early twenties hotties trying to be the "cool popular kids". They're just people trying to have a god party, actually I don't think age has anything to do with it, as far as I know the age range was anywhere between 18-53. But I can see your wife maybe not being to happy with it.
As to the young woman walking into the wall, it was probably because you looked good. I can't imagine anyone being surprised by what someone was wearing, people were barely fased by my leopard girl from outer space costume.

So it's a Republican party?

Sorry, couldn't resist. Image
