Last January, we arranged a BARCC (Boston Area Rape Crisis Center) workshop on responding to sexual harassment that was very well received and we promised to do it again this year.
We have arranged to have a workshop from BARCC on the topic of responding to reports of harassment within the community for Boskone & Arisia staff, and anyone else interested. It will be on Tuesday, December 11th, at the NESFA Clubhouse, at 7:30pm.

Detailed description:
Many people have had the experience of receiving a disclosure from an adult about experiences of sexual violence. The research is clear that peoples’ responses to disclosures can be critical in shaping the course of healing for survivors. This highly interactive skill-based workshop will explore common reactions to sexual violence (whether recent or long in the past), issues of secondary trauma, and a tool for responding appropriately and effectively. Additionally the training will cover activities that focus on challenging inappropriate sexual and violent behaviors in one'’s community and environment. *Please note that this is different from the usual work-provided harassment training.*

The clubhouse is at 504 Medford St., Somerville; parking is in the rear (359 Lowell St), or on the street (4 quarters/hour until 8pm). More directions at http://www.nesfa.org/clubhouse/location.html.

Please DO plan to arrive before 7:30 PM (but after 7 PM) so that we can start on time. RSVPs appreciated but not required (kovalcik@alum.mit.edu) so that we can get an idea of how many handouts to have them prepare.

Volunteer for 8 hours and you can get this awesome shirt [designed by Jenny Anckorn ([livejournal.com profile] ultralilac)]. Help us out: http://2011.arisia.org/volunteers

Hi Arisians.

As the con gets closer, Staff den and Green Room would like to offer some of you an opportunity to get in volunteer hours *before the con starts*. We need people who have experience in food service, ans understand food safety to help us prepare meals for guests and staff. If you've worked in a kitchen, as a caterer, or have a food safety certification, we'd like your help cooking.

Work done before the convention can count towards this years membership if you don't have one, instead of next years membership, and no matter how much time you put in, that's more time at con you can spend doing whatever you want. If you're broke, and want to go to the con but can't afford to, give us 12 hours pre-con, and you get in for free. Keep in mind that this is only for people who have the necessary experience.

We also need food-safe and experienced types to help out at the con itself. This job gives you not only a warm, happy glow that comes form feeding people, but also a meal. Our staff eats well, and free.

If you're interested, please email joshjasper.nyc at gmail.com and we can work out when you'll be able to help.

Thanks, and see you all at the con!

Thank you to the artists who have already contributed to our search for the best volunteer shirt design with the them of Mad Science. We have had some wonderful designs turned in. Just wanted to remind everyone that the deadline for submissions is November 15th. Please send your designs to publications@arisia.org.

Hi all,

[livejournal.com profile] sinboy and I will be in the Boston area all next week to cook for the green room, but we will not be car-enabled (we're New Yorkers and don't drive). If you have a minivan or SUV and time to drive it and us around during the day next week, please let me know! We will repay all your kindness with tasty baked goods and/or chili (vegan options available!) at the con, plus you get access to the member-only awesomeness of Costco and Restaurant Depot, plus time spent shopping for the con counts as volunteer time, so this is a great deal for anyone who likes to cook and wants to earn some hours towards a t-shirt or a comp for 2011.

Comment here or email greenroom@arisia.org if you can help out. Many many many thanks.

Are you a big fan of anime?  Then have I got the greatest Arisia VOLUNTEER JOB for you!!!  All you need to do is watch anime all night long, on Friday, Saturday and/or Sunday night.  Arisia volunteers earn a free T-shirt after 8 hours, and at 12 hours you also get a comped membership to Arisia 2011 (at our NEW and FABULOUSO location).

You earn VOLUNTEER HOURS for doing your favorite thing!  And you don't miss any of the other parts of Arisia that you love.  You can choose your hours, if you get back to me soon enough, but mostly this will be from midnight to 7am.  You'll be in charge of changing DVDs, keeping an secure eye on Arisia's equipment, and watching hours of great anime.

Interested?  Contact me at SciFiFanBoston at Gmail dot com.  Put ANIME ROOM in the subject line.

I'm getting rid of most of my t-shirts, since I so rarely wear them. I'm sad to relinquish my Arisia '09 volunteer shirt, but since I must, I would like it to go to an Arisian home. Anyone want it? It's a ladies' fitted tee in "babydoll" style, size L (fits maybe size 8-10?), powder blue with dark blue sleeves. Leave a comment if you're interested.

PLEASE NOTE: This offer is only open to people who worked enough hours at Arisia '09 to earn a shirt, and who either didn't get a shirt in their preferred size or would like a spare.

EDIT: Taken already!

Happy Holidays to all of the Arisia Community! Registration has a few quick things...

1 - Registration rates go up to $60 January 1st, 2009. So if you know for sure that you will be attending Arisia, and haven't purchased your membership yet, we suggest you do so now. While at the moment we have plenty of memberships still, we do expect to hit our membership cap Friday Night or Saturday Morning of the convention.

2 - Registration is still looking for a few more volunteers to help us throughout the weekend. Please see my previous post for more information. Please e-mail reg@arisia.org if you would like to help out, or with any questions on the matter.

3 - We have updated our registration hours. The registration desk will be open:
Friday 2pm-11pm
Saturday 9am-8pm
Sunday 9am-8pm
Monday 9:30am-2pm

Thanks!

Registration is looking for volunteers to help us at this year's con. As a registration staffer you would: register people and take their money; print badges for the pre-registered people; help hand out badges; re-stock brochures; hone the timeless art of line-wrangling, etc. We will train you, but it helps if you have previous computer experience. Flexible shifts available.

The group that works registration is a fun group of people to spend time with, and the registration desk is centrally located, making it an ideal place to hang out during the weekend. Our flexible shift schedules make it easy to help out with the con while never missing any of your favorite events or panels!

To volunteer for registration or to get more info please e-mail registration@arisia.org

Remember, volunteering 8 hours at Arisia is the only way to get an official Arisia Volunteers shirt, and 12 hours will earn you a membership for the following year!

We need registration workers during the following times:

Thursday Setup* (Time TBD)
Friday Setup* 10am-Noon; Noon-11pm
Saturday 9am-8pm
Sunday 9am-8pm
Monday 9:20am-2pm

*Work during setup will earn you double hours!

EDIT: we've moved the location of the registration desk for this year away from the doorways that it was near last year. So the issues of being cold due to doorway proximity should not be a problem!

Arisia is fast approaching. Amazing how that just sneaks up on you.

Have you reserved your hotel room? If not, the main hotel is nearly filled up (only King sized beds left on Sat).

Also, don't forget to get your registration ahead of time. Rates go up on January 1st.

Lastly, the volunteer t-shirt is fabulous and you're going to want one of your own. The only way to get it is by volunteering for 8* hours. :D We have a lot of openings, so visit the Arisia site and see if there's something you'd like to help out with.

See you there,
[livejournal.com profile] jasra

*8 hours! 12 gets you in free next year. Ooops!

Registration could use helpers. You would: register people and take their money; print badges for the pre-registered people; help hand out badges; re-stock brochures, etc. We will train you, but it helps if you have previous computer experience. Flexible shifts (see below for details).

We're a fun group to work with and usually have a good time at Registration. There's no point volunteering if you don't get to have fun (that's my theory anyway). So, come work with us!

In charge of reg for Arisia '07: [livejournal.com profile] jiapa, [livejournal.com profile] dancingwolfgrrl, and [livejournal.com profile] jasra. With the ever helpful [livejournal.com profile] shayde.

The shifts are as follows:
Thursday: setup* (probably starting at 2 pm until things are working properly).
Friday: setup* (noon-2), 2-5 pm, 5-8 pm, 8-11 pm (plus time to take apart registration and put things in the storage room).
Saturday: 8:30 am (that's when we set up, not when we open) - 1 pm, 1-4 pm, 4-8 pm (plus time to take apart registration and put things in the storage room).
Sunday: 9 am (that's when we set up, not when we open) - 1 pm, 1-4pm, breakdown* (4-? pm - breaking down and packing everything up)

So, if you'd like to help, please send email to reg AT arisia DOT org and let us know your preferred shifts!

* This time counts double.
