Will Arisia be using the Conventionist app this year?  Did it work out well last year?
I didn't have a compatible device last year.

Preliminary schedules are up for program participants. To view them, participants should log into Zambia. If you find any problems in your schedule please contact program@arisia.org

This also means that there is less than a month until we post the schedule on the website!

This year we will once again be having the tactile tour of the Arisia art show. While the precise day and time has not yet been scheduled, we already have our volunteer docent and we are arranging to provide cotton gloves for the participants.

If you are an artist who wishes her or his art to be experienced by those with vision or other sensory impairments during the tactile art show, there should be a checkbox on the Arisia art show entry form which allows you to communicate this to the organizers. Only art which has been expressly allowed to be touched will be included in the tactile art tour. Artists are also encouraged to be present during the tour, and may give a very short explanation of their work if they so desire (a couple of sentences works well with our time limitation).

This tour usually lasts an hour, sometimes a little over an hour. People without sensory impairments are very welcome to attend the tour but, since the size of the group has to be limited in order to move through the show, priority is given to people with disabilities.

New Participant Applications Now Closed

Thank you to everyone who applied to be a participant this year. We have closed new participant applications for this year to focus on developing the programming for this year's convention. See you all in January!
[identity profile] crazybone.livejournal.com
This is a notice that panel selection is open, and you need to get
your choices in by 11:59 PM Saturday October 15th. There were a few people
having technical problems accessing Zambia or saving their choices. If
you are one of these, please try it again, and let us know if you are
still having trouble.

In response to your comments and feedback there have been several
additions of new panels since panel selection opened. I encourage you
to take another glance through to see if there is anything new that
you would want to sign-up for.

Please take the time to fill out the section as to why you would be a
strong addition for each panel you have expressed interest in. We use
this as an important tool in panelist selection, and often the people
who are under enrolled at the end of the scheduling process find it is
because we didn't realize the participant's background until too late.

If you are interested in being in the Masquerade, please be aware that
tech rehearsal sign-ups will take place from 12-5 in 8 minute blocks
on Saturday. The Masquerade generally runs from 8-10 pm.

Note: Further updates from Programming will only be sent to
participants who have indicated that they are attending Arisia 2012.
If you have not already done so, and do plan on attending the
convention this year, please indicate "Yes" in the drop-down menu next
to  "I am interested and able to participate in programming for Arisia
'12" and click the Update button.  This selection can be found on the
participant start page after login.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email program AT arisia DOT org.

Thank you all for being an important part of Arisia.

Arisia Lightning Presentations

What are they?

What's your passion? Arisia would like you to share something that inspires you in one of our Lightning Presentations. This new entry in Arisia programming was inspired by TED talks and performances and the excitement they provoke. Come and listen and find out what we want to share.

How can I participate?

Here are the restrictions:
* All presentations are five minutes in length, no matter the subject or presentation style. PowerPoint or Open Office slides are welcomed. Other creative formats are possible -- readings, short videos, dramatic, musical, or dance presentations. It still has to be under 5 minutes
* Everyone is a potential audience member, so please keep sex and/or violence to PG-13 or less.
* This isn't recruiting, although networking with people who're interested by your talk is encouraged. Just share with the audience why Foo is really cool!
* Your presentation may not be a commercial for your services or product.

Not everyone who signs up will be chosen. We are looking for variety. We are looking for passion. Perhaps we are looking for you.

Nuts and bolts:
We’ll decide on presenters and notify them by November 15th. PowerPoint, Open Office, or other presentations will be due on December 26th. All presentations will be loaded onto one laptop for projection.

We’ll post the time slot for the Lightning Presentations as soon as we know it.

The sign-up form is at Arisia.org.

At this time we have opening up panel sign-ups for program participants.

Emails with further information have gone out to program participants already. If you are a program
participant for 2012 and have not received this email yet, please contact us as soon as possible.

Also, please take a moment again to consider your stated availability. In
particular, just as a reminder, the Arisia Masquerade generally runs
from 8-10 pm on Saturday.

The deadline for initial panel selection by participants is October 14h, 2011.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding Arisia Programming,
please email program@arisia.org

Hello to you all,

The Brainstorming list for Arisia 2012 is now closed. Thanks to all who suggested ideas and contributed to the discussion. While many good ideas were suggested, not all of them will make it to the final schedule. Also keep in mind that suggesting an idea doesn't automatically qualify you as a participant nor does it guarantee a seat on the item suggested. If you still have ideas for Programming/Events items, you can email them to proposals@arisia.org and they will be evaluated on a case by case basis time and space permitting. All other Programming-related questions should be sent to program@arisia.org. The Programming staff will be reviewing the submitted ideas in the coming weeks for inclusion in the list of available panels. The notice inviting participants will sent out in the first half of August 2011. We appreciate your time and effort in helping shape the Programming for the upcoming convention.

The Brainstorm mailing list, where we discuss programming ideas, will shut down for this year on Sunday July 31 at 11:59 PM.

If you want to participate in a discussion list on programming/event ideas, join the Arisia Brainstorming list. Go to: http://arisia.org/mailman/listinfo/brainstorm to subscribe to the list. If you want to just email your ideas straight sans discussion or joining Brainstorming, email proposals at arisia dot org.

The deadline for submitting ideas to Brainstorming list is 7/31/2011. After that point, ideas can still be submitted to proposals at arisia dot org and will be evaluated on a case by case basis.

Many ideas that make our programming better come from the brainstorm list and we thank everyone for their participation.

We're excited to announce this year's PRELIMINARY schedule of events. While this is not set in stone yet, it will give you a good idea of when things are happening!
[identity profile] traingeek.livejournal.com
Josh Simpson, our Artist GOH has generously donated prizes for a writing contest. There will be one of Josh’s larger spheres, an inhabited world full of fascinating things at the art show. What lives in that planet? What are the stories you can tell about the inhabitants?

The details: Write a short fiction (1000 words MAX) based on the Josh Simpson megaplanet on display. Submit it on line or on paper at the convention between Friday 5 pm and Saturday 6:30 pm. A winner and two runners-up will receive small planetoids as prizes from Josh Simpson on Sunday at con. Judges will deliberate on Saturday evening and their decision is final. More details will be on line and posted at the info desk and the art show. Please send questions to goh@arisia.org .

[time corrected on #1]

This year, we’re delighted to offer two writing workshops, open to all (no writing submission required to attend) but with limited signup. Sign-up before the convention is highly recommended.

Writing workshop #1: Nisi Shawl presents “Writing the Other”. In this workshop, Nisi will present a hands-on writing class featuring exercises and explorations of ways to create believable characters of a different race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, or ability. Participants will be asked to bring some of their own writing to work on, but sharing is not required. Expect to spend three hours learning by doing.

The workshop will take place Sunday from 11 am to 2 pm. There is a limit of 15 people.

You do not need to submit writing to participate in the workshop, nor are you required to share your work, but you should have some writing of your own to bring along to work on. Sign up at using the following form: http://2011.arisia.org/NisiShawlSignup

Writing workshop #2: Kelley Armstrong presents a workshop on writing YA fiction. This workshop will discuss crafting characters, setting, and plot with a particular focus on what makes YA fiction different from other fiction in the genre. For this workshop, we will be giving preference to high school and college students who sign up in advance. If there are still spaces available after January 7th, we will include others on a first come, first serve basis.

You do not need to submit writing to participate in this workshop, nor are you required to share your work, but you should have some writing of your own to bring along. Sign up using the following form: http://2011.arisia.org/KelleyArmstrongSignup

Check out a preview of some highlights of our panels.

One of the foundations of Arisia programming are panels. These led discussions cover a wide spectrum of topics including everything including Anime, Art, Comics, Costuming, Fan Culture, Fan Interest, Fandom 2.0, Gaming, Health, Literature, Media, Music, Science, Victorian/Steampunk, and Writing. (Wow, say that all in one breath.)

A "panel" is usually a small group of people discussing a topic in front of an audience of fans. Often there is input from the audience in the form of questions, brainstorming or other forms of audience participation. Although panels are our main mode of discussion, don't feel bound to that format. Fan-led discussion groups, workshops, lectures, presentations etc. are welcome.

Once again, Arisia welcomes LARPers of all styles and experience levels to come play at any of the fabulous games running at the con this year. Read about the LARPs we're offering this year.

Come join us for a Breakfast Buffet with your favorite Guest of Honor or special guest!

The Breakfast Buffet will be Sunday morning (January 16, 2011) at 11AM.

Tickets for the Breakfast Buffet are $35 and now available on our site.

This will be a great opportunity at the convention to sit down and chat with your choice of a fannish "person of interest," such as one of our Guests of Honor. In total, we plan to have 12 tables of 8 persons each; at each table will be a special guest. We are currently working with Programming to identify and schedule the special participants. As soon as that is done, we will be sending out a notification to all those who have already purchased their banquet tickets so they can identify their top four choices of tables. This is definitely a first-come, first-served event, so buy your ticket early if you want to make sure you get your top choice!

We're pleased to announce our list of special guests at the Breakfast.

Arisia 2011 excitedly announces that Seanan McGuire has graciously
agreed to be a Special Guest of the convention this year.

Seanan McGuire is an American author and filker. She was awarded the
John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer by the 2010 World Science
Fiction Convention. This award was announced at Aussiecon 4 on
September 5, 2010. As this award is in the form of a tiara and the
award was presented in Australia, Seanan has blogged that this makes
her "Officially the Princess of the Kingdom of Poison and Flame". In
2010, McGuire's novel FEED (written under the pseudonym Mira Grant)
ranked #74 in an National Public Radio listener poll of the top 100
Thriller novels of all time. McGuire has won three Pegasus Awards and
been nominated for 4 more.

Seanan will be participating in many things at Arisia this year,
including the Breakfast Buffet with Special Guests event on Sunday.
