Room

I have a room reserved but January is always my lean month, so I'm not going to be able to afford it. Does anyone want to either room with me (I am shomer shabbos and keep kosher but that's not really here nor there - but if you're an Orthodox Jew looking for a room that'd be cool) or take my room (I will probably ask that I can occassionally use the shower and crash for a small fee as I'm coming regardless)

Let me know. My email address is omanlieder-at-yahoo - and my lj is also good. I'll check back on this one as well.

elevators

You may recall that last year the elevators had some, er, reliability problems. Since then the hotel has done some more work on the elevators, so hopefully things will not be quite as bad this year. We've also learned a few interesting things about these elevators, and one of them in particular is so bizarre that I have to share.

The Hyatt's elevators have doors that open to one side instead of from the center as some elevators do. That is, each elevator has just one door. Typically for elevators, the edge of this door has a sensor bar; touching it anywhere will make the door reopen. But it takes the elevator a fraction of a second to notice that you're trying to open it, and during that time pressure on the sensor bar can make the door derail, and then the nice folks from the maintenance company have to come out and fix it.

The workaround is not to touch the doors, ever. There's a "door open" button in the elevator cab which will hold the doors open for a while, and that doesn't break the elevator.

This is not the bizarre part.

The bizarre part is that the doorframe on the opposite side -- the part that doesn't move -- also has a sensor bar on it, and that touching that sensor bar also keeps the door open. I've never seen anything like it before.

So if you're running for an elevator at Arisia, don't hold the door by the edge. Hold the doorframe on the other side instead.

Hey Folks! Please find information on the Friday night Sith Charity Ball at http://2008.arisia.org/SithBall . There will be lots of cool things to see on opening night - we hope to see you there!

There will be raffle tickets for sale at the ball and at the 501st/Rebel Legion fan table on Saturday - all proceeds benefit the Make a Wish Foundation. Our drawing will be held at the 3:00 PM Fandom and Charity panel on Saturday (you do not need to be present to win - prizes will be claimed in the Ops office). Tickets will be 2/$5 except for some very cool special prizes which will have their own drawings (tickets for those prizes are $5 each). The list of prizes is quite impressive and is growing! You can view it here:

As last year, I will be attending ARISIA with video camera in hand (or more likely on tripod ;-) and want to arrange for Press Credentials. I am already a paid member. I don't want a Press Pass .. just Press Credentials.

I have sent e-Mail to a couple of people ..without an answer so far. If I remember correctly, last year it was the same. When I got to the con the person who I dealt with told me they had been assigned the job like a week before.

As far as I was aware, when you put in enough volunteer hours to qualify for a comp membership the next year, the comp membership wasn't automatically registered, you had to actually ask for it when the next convention came around. If you didn't contact Arisia registration to use your comp membership, you were not registered for the convention and the comp membership was held until the next time you chose to register. That means that you were not depriving someone else of a membership who wanted one.

More detail:
I put in enough hours last year to get a membership comp for this year.
So far this year I have not contacted registration to ask for my comp membership.

Is my comp membership going to be sitting there waiting for me this year or not?
