Eyeglass Drive Reminder
Dec. 29th, 2005 03:46 amHopefully you'll see many reminders of this, and at the last minute when you're packing for the con, you'll reach in the back of your dresser drawer and pull out those old eye-glasses you've been meaning to get rid of.
Bring your old, used eyeglasses for donation to people in urgent need in developing countries, and enter a free raffle to win great prizes.
Fandom can show that we care about people in all worlds, including our own, and at the same time clean out our dresser and desk drawers. Over 4 million pairs of eyeglasses are thrown away each year in North America. Fifty percent of children in institutions for the blind in Africa would be able to read normal or large print if they had eyeglasses; but the price for glasses in Benin and other African countries can exceed three months' average salary.
Unite for Sight, like fandom, is run by thousands of volunteers who will make sure your glasses get to the people who need them most. Just bring
your used prescription eyeglasses or non prescription UV-protected sunglasses, to the collection box on the mezzanine level at Arisia. The glasses will be prescribed in Ghana, Tanzania, Benin, Uganda, Cameroon, Kenya, Thailand and India. Affix the provided tag with your name and contact information to each pair of classes, for a drawing for prizes donated by the Guests of Honor and others.
If you are a dealer and would like free-promotion in exchange for a donated prize, please contact me directly at miss_chance@livejournal.com.
