I've finally posted my Arisia pics. They are all in stereo / 3d and available in two formats. The prefered means of viewing the images is in the side by side format. You'll either need special viewing glasses or the ability to control your eyes better than I can. Optionally if you have red / blue glasses (given out with various 3d movies and toys) you can view the red / blue anaglyph format images. If you have neither and want to see the images in 2d then look at the side by side formatted images.

I have higher res images that are good for printing of all of the images (and personally have a print version of each of the images I posted for use in my stereo print viewers and should have them with me at diesel on tuesday). If you want a copy of any of the larger files, let me know which ones (email me at the address on the bottom of the images thumbnail page) and I'll get them to you. You can then take it to just about any photo lab and have it printed for less than 30 cents per image for 4x6's or a $1-5 for 5x7's and 8x10's.

The easiest way (for me, at least) is to reverse the positioning of the left and right images in the side-by-side format. That way, they can be correctly viewed by crossing the eyes, which I and some others find easier than trying to focus in imaginary depth.

Another way to give a 3D effect, even for people who have trouble refocusing their eyes in odd ways, is to rapidly switch between the two images. (See, among other examples, major_clanger's default userpic.) There might be some simple way to do this in JavaScript, perhaps even with a way to control the switch rate....

I considered doing this, I even scribbled out a quick javascript page to test what it would look like. I decided that without retooling all of the images individually they wouldn't look very good in this format (and I already spent the better part of a day on this image set). The gory details follow. The issue is that when using this format, you want the focal point of the image to be the axis upon which the image is rotated. In other words you want the images to be placed such that things at the distance from the camera of the subject of the image doesn't shift between the two images but everything else does. This is also one of the ideals with red/blue anaglyph images because it means you have the least ghosting on your image subject. However on traditional stereo photography you put this convergence distance at infinity because it is more natural for viewing. Because I'm using hyper-stereo (two cameras are further apart than the eyes) and taking pictures where the subject is about 6 ft away, I need to compromise on that and move the convergence point forward, and I typically prefer a few feet behind the subject for this type of photo. What this means for the flipping technique of viewing is that you have NOTHING staying put and so nothing to focus on. Hmm, I suppose if I redid my tool chain (I wrote the whole thing anyway), I could fairly easily support almost all of the standard viewing formats in a javascript app and set up the images fairly painlessly. I think that's for another day though.

Grr. Almost have enough eye control (I've spent a lot of time viewing dot-stereo, a long time ago), but not quite -- can get "twins", but can't get them to merge at any size. Ah well.

Wow, tres cool! Why didn't I think of bringing my stereo camera? Thanks for doing that! Maybe next year we can both do stereos of the con. (I'm using the cheap Argus, but it should do fine indoors.)
