An Interesting Discussion Regarding Arisia

An interesting discussion between an Arisia newcomer / observer & someone who dismisses f&sf fandom in total - Weigh In, Have Fun! http://bit.ly/8Wt2d6

Maybe my count is off, but there were only three five poly panels.

Quoting Jane Q. over on that othe rsite:

I wish very strongly that the convention had a few less poly panels in the alternative lifestyle track.

What alternative lifestyle track?

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic here. I count over a dozen panels that would qualify as "alternative lifestyle" which is enough to make a track whether or not they were grouped as such.

Even as someone who is involved in such things, I think that's too much.

I'm not, I'm just going with what was officially listed on the programs.

Then that's something that should be dealt with by programming, but saying it's a track, when that has a fairly official use, doesn't make it a track.

I counted 10 more that were not directly poly, but were alternative relationship panels

I think Arisia (and rightly so) gives more focus/time to the panels that have high attendance, and from the panels I was at/stopped into it seemed that the lifestyle panels had some of the highest attendance, along with the yr in review for TV, review of Movies, the nostalgia movie trailers, and a few others.

I agree, even though it is not explicitly listed as such, it does feel like it is a track...

It feels like a track because it kinda is. "Fan Interest" is a catch-all track that includes a whole bunch of things that don't necessarily fit anywhere else. For 2010, three tracks from the previous year were combined into one large track. Since the track did not have a well-defined identity, I tried to give it one. I'm the Track Manager for Fan Interest, and I definitely designed it with the idea of "Mini Tracks" in mind. The Poly and Adult mini-tracks are readily obvious. There was also one for SMOFing, Internet Culture, and General Geekery. So if you got the impression that there were little tracks within the track, it's because it was designed that way.
