That's unfair to San Diego Comic-Con. They've got a big media presence, sure, but they've also hosted panels devoted to indie comic artists like David B., Adrian Tomine, Carla Speed, James Sturm and many, many others. It gets all the press for the movie star aspect, but if you can get in and you're a fan of underground/indie comics it's actually a pretty great show. A couple of years ago I moderated a panel at San Diego Comic-Con of artists for the company Slave Labor Graphics.
